The Secret Spectacle of Siem Reap’s Royal Gardens

If you take a stroll near the Royal Residence in the late afternoon, look up. You might notice that the massive, ancient trees lining the park seem to be covered in strange, dark fruits… until they start to move.
These are actually Giant Fruit Bats, also known as « Lyle’s Flying Foxes. » Unlike their cave-dwelling cousins, these bats spend their days hanging from branches right in the heart of the city.

Why you shouldn’t miss it

It is one of Siem Reap’s most fascinating hidden gems. Around 5:30 PM to 6:00 PM, just before sunset, thousands of bats take flight simultaneously to head into the surrounding jungle to feed on fruit. Watching their silhouettes drift across the orange sky is like watching a live nature documentary.

Did you know?

These bats are a protected species and are considered a symbol of good luck by the locals. They are completely harmless to humans: they are strict vegetarians and play a vital role in pollinating the region’s forest.

Your host’s tip: After watching the bats take flight, enjoy the evening breeze in the Royal Gardens or cross the bridge for a peaceful walk before heading back to relax at the house.
